When did it emerge?

Its classical framework took shape during the Warring States and early Han periods, more than 2,000 years ago.

What does it represent in China?

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are not simply substances. They describe recurring phases of growth, heat, stability, contraction, and flow across nature, medicine, government, music, and divination.

Who developed or used it?

The thinker Zou Yan is traditionally associated with influential yin–yang and Five-Phase theories, although the ideas developed across many texts and schools.

What did practitioners actually do?

Practitioners studied how phases generate and restrain one another, using balance and change rather than a fixed good-versus-bad scale.

Historical noteThere is no single creator of the Five Phases, and modern birth-chart versions combine several later traditions.
