CULTURAL DOSSIERFour Pillars of Destiny
When did it emerge?
Matured between the Tang and Song dynasties, roughly 1,000–1,300 years ago.
What does it represent in China?
A form of Chinese calendrical thought: birth time is translated into four pairs of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, then read as a pattern of timing and relationship.
Who developed or used it?
Tang scholar Li Xuzhong is linked to an earlier three-pillar method; later tradition associates the four-pillar form with the Song-era figure Xu Ziping.
What did practitioners actually do?
Specialists compared the year, month, day, and hour pillars through yin–yang and Five-Phase relationships. It was used to discuss temperament, life cycles, family, work, and timing.

Historical noteThis was a developing scholarly tradition, not a finished system invented on one day by one person.
